This session will kick off the 2021-2022 year’s Transnational Dialogues in Afrolatindad webinar series. The panel will focus on the arts, identity, and social justice. Featured presenters include Pablo D. Herrera Veitia, an acclaimed Afro-Cuban hip hop music producer and PhD candidate in social anthropology; Jade Cintrón Báez, founder and artistic director of "¡Looking Bilingüe!" a YouTube storytelling series that celebrates biculturalism and bilingualism in the Latinx community; Zuly Inirio, an Afro-Dominican opera singer and founder of the Afro-Latinx Song and Opera Project which commissions musical works on the stories of U.S. Afro-Latinxs; and Jason Méndez, a Boricua writer, playwright, performer, educator and founder of Block Chronicles, a national web-series and online magazine profiling Latinx and other BIPOC educators. Michele Reid-Vazquez, director of the Afrolatinidad Studies Initiative, and Luana Reis, president of the ADDverse Poetry Collective, will serve as co-moderators.These scholars and artists work at the intersections of music, education, Latinx, Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican Studies and will explore the ways that these issues overlap and impact U.S. Afro-Latinxs and Afro-Latin American communities.
