Description

This session will provide an overview of empirical results from a research study
conducted between 2017 and 2020 with Latina, nonprofit chief executive officers.
Leaders represented healthcare, education, philanthropy, social services, and advocacy
organizations. The study explored the impact that mentoring relationships have had on
Latinas currently in executive positions. Five key elements will be presented including
evolution of relationship types and functions, needs for mentor constellations, support
for intersectional backgrounds and authenticity, match suitability, and peer networks.
The facilitator will provide an analysis of findings with implications for workforce
retention practices and policy for more equitable leadership representation of women
and people of color. Regardless of their current role, participants will have an
opportunity to complete a mentor constellation scan to identify needs for their own
growth, as well as participate in a discussion about establishing peer-led communities of
nonprofit practice.

Dr. Belinda Hernández is a university, nonprofit, and government leader based in the San
Francisco Bay Area operating her consulting group for over 15 years, the Hernandez Consulting
Group, Inc. She collaborates with clients and organizations throughout the United States and
Puerto Rico. Her research perspective is rooted in asset-based thinking that explores leadership
development among underrepresented women and people of color in executive roles. Her
practice includes identification and growth of social capital and community cultural wealth with
aims to improve educational and workforce development strategies that eliminate racial and
gender leadership gaps within the executive suite. She is a national conference speaker, received
awards for her mentoring work, and has given numerous presentations related to mentoring,
leadership, and qualitative research methodology. She developed a researcher self-reflexivity
process model educating researchers on the process of research reconciliation, especially as first
generation academic researchers.
