Description

This session will be structured as a workshop looking at the development of the Sal Castro Academy for Urban Teacher Leaders at the Charter College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles. Participants in the workshop will explore the legacy of Sal Castro as a teacher and Chicano leader during the Civil Rights movement. During this session, participants will also examine the role of leadership to advance advocacy initiatives. They will consider new strategies to grow support at universities and in the community, enabling them to identify new ways to secure funding, buy-in, and amplify the outcomes. Effective advocacy requires method and skill. When advocates ask, what can I do? - they are often looking for ideas to navigate their political context. This is the gap this session addresses.

Marisela Cervantes began her career advising prospective first-year and transfer students on admission to California State University, Los Angeles. She went on to hold senior roles advising members of both houses of the state legislature. In 2007, she became the inaugural executive director of the Southeast Cities Schools Coalition, that worked to advance reforms at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Over the past decade she has held several administrative roles at LAUSD and the California State University Office of the Chancellor, engaging diverse stakeholders to expand college readiness. Throughout her career, she has worked alongside teacher leaders to advance candidates and policies with the aim at democratizing education. Her dissertation research examined the role of leadership in policy implementation. She holds a doctorate in educational leadership from California State University, Los Angeles, where she also served three consecutive terms on the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
