If You Create It, You Can Cultivate It: Culturally Relevant Pedagogical Practices for the Classroom
Presenter: Lorainne I. Rodríguez Vargas
Session Type: Workshop
Topic: Identities and intersectionality
Description
Latinx communities in the USA and in the world are increasingly being recognized for their richness and complexities. This session will provide educators with insights to continue advancing their mindfulness of these identities and the role of cultural and racial identity in student learning. In this session, the first aim will be to provide information related to the concept, origin and value of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP). In this effort we will discuss how CRP came to be, citing the literature. We will review studies that utilized CRP and highlight its effectiveness in creating inclusive classroom environments. We will provide insight too, on how those studies implemented CRP. The second aim of the session will be to provide instructors with some exercises that will help them create more inclusive classroom environments using the CRP framework.
