Description

Latinx clients face many obstacles in obtaining services for substance use disorders. Despite being more likely to need substance use treatment, the Latinx community has less access to substance use treatment and must wait longer to access such services when compared to non-Latinx (Wells, 2001). This session will assist professionals in better serving the common, sociopolitical struggles and the diversity and unique strengths within these communities, including the role that resiliency has in overcoming substance use disorders. Resiliency compromises of strengths that stem from the individual, community, and societal levels (Whitfield et al., 2020). It is important to empower clients to navigate through the many challenges that may include discrimination, lack of legal status, family separation and other stressors.
