Transnational Chicanx Perspectives on Ana Castillo is the first edited collection by University of Pittsburgh Press, that focuses on Castillo’s oeuvre, which directly confronts what happens in response to cultural displacement, mixing, and border crossing.

Dr. Elena Avilés joined the Spanish program faculty at West Los Angeles College in 2019. Previously, she taught at Portland State University as an Assistant Professor of Chicano/Latino Studies since 2014. She earned a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures (2014) and M.A. in Spanish (2008) at the University of New Mexico (UNM). She is trained in Spanish as second languages and heritage languages pedagogy and Hispanic languages and literatures. Her research interests are Chicanx theories, pedagogies, feminisms and language use. She also likes to delve into Chicanx children’s and young adult literature.

Bernadine Hernández

Dr. Bernadine Hernández is an Assistant professor of American Literary History at the University of New Mexico. She specializes in transnational feminism and sexual economies of the US-Mexico borderlands, along with American Literary Studies/Empire, border and migration history and theory, and Chicana/Latina Literature and Sexualities. Her forthcoming book with UNC press is titled Border Bodies: Racialized Sexuality, Sexual Capital, and Violence in the Nineteenth Century Borderlands, which is the first book length study that focuses on sexual capital and gender and sexual violence in the borderlands in the nineteenth and early twentieth-centuries through recovered archival work. She is also the co-editor of the first edited collection on Ana Castillo titled New Transnational Latinx Perspectives on Ana Castillo, published with University of Pittsburgh Press in Spring 2021. Her other publications appear in Comparative Literature and Culture, Transgender Studies Quarterly, Women’s Studies Quarterly, among others. She
is also a public-facing scholar and works with the artist and writer collective fronteristxs, a collective of artists and writers in New Mexico working to end migrant detention and abolish the prison industrial complex through creative activism. She sits on the City of Albuquerque Public Arts Board and is launching a Border Literacy Project with the fronteristxs. Her forthcoming community-engaged scholarship is a five-year project titled The South Valley Solidarity Economies Development Network, which is a collaborative project to create solidarity economies in the South Valley of Albuquerque, New Mexico through youth programming, ages 5-25.

Karen Roybal

Karen R. Roybal holds a PhD in American Studies from the University of New Mexico with specializations in Southwest Studies, Chicanx and Latinx literature and history, and Cultural Studies. Her teaching pedagogy is interdisciplinary and her courses focus on literature, arts and culture, archival studies, Southwest/Borderlands history, and environmental justice.

Dr. Roybal's book, Archives of Dispossession: Recovering the Testimonios of Mexican American Herederas, 1848-1960, was published by University of North Carolina Press in September 2017. Her other work has been published in Southwestern American Literature; Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies; Culture, Theory and Critique; Chicana/Latina Studies, and IMPACT: The Journal of the Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching & Learning. She has contributed book chapters to the edited collections: Querencia: Essays on the New Mexico Homeland. Eds. Vanessa Fonseca-Chávez, Spencer Herrera, and Levi Romero. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press. (Publication date: May 2020); and Teaching Western American Literature. Eds. Randi Lynn Tanglen and Brady A. Harrison. Dr. Roybal's most recent project is a co-edited collection with Dr. Bernadine Hernández (UNM) entitled New Transnational Latinx Perspectives on Ana Castillo, slated for release from the University of Pittsburgh Press in spring 2021.

Sandra Ruiz

Dr. Sandra Ruiz is an educator and scholar of Spanish language, Spanish heritage language as well as Mexican and Chicanx/Latinx Studies. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, holds a doctorate from UCLA where she specialized in late twentieth century Chicanx and Mexican literatures. She is an Associate Professor of Spanish & Chicana/o/x Studies as well as Vice Chair of Modern Languages & Cultures at West Los Angeles College. She is currently working on her book manuscript focused on Chicana and Mexicana feminist crime narratives and the social-cultural responses spurred by these experiences.
